Mahindra has just issued a recall for the recently launched Scorpio-N, and the XUV700 Diesel Manual variants. The recall aims to check and replace the rubber bellow inside the clutch bell housing of the SUVs. Mahindra has revealed that a quality control glitch at the vendor’s end could have affected ‘operational dimensional clearance’ of the rubber bellow found inside the clutch bell housing.
This could adversely impact the performance of the Mahindra Scorpio-N and XUV700 diesel manual trims. To correct this, Mahindra has instructed dealers to proactively get in touch with affected Scorpio-N and XUV700 owners, and carry out the fix at no cost to the customer. This recall affects 6,618 units of the newly launched Mahindra Scorpio-N, and 12,566 units of the XUV700 manufactured between 1st July and 11th November, 2022.
Here’s the automaker’s official statement on the latest recall, which also happens to be the first recall for the Scorpio-N,
We will proactively inspect rubber below inside bell housing on a batch of 6618 units of Scorpio-N manual transmission vehicles and a batch of 12,566 units of XUV700 manual transmission vehicles, assembled on limited days of manufacturing, between 1st July and 11th November, 2022. A sorting process error at the supplier’s plant, on specific dates, may have affected operational dimensional clearance of rubber bellow inside bell housing. Keeping with the company’s stringent quality standards and exercising abundant caution, Mahindra has proactively engaged in this limited inspection and subsequent rectification, free of cost. Customers will be individually contacted by the dealership. As an endeavour to ensure a hassle-free experience for its customers, the company is proactively carrying out this activity.
Both the Scorpio-N and the XUV700 share the same 2.2 liter mHawk turbocharged diesel engine. On the Scorpio-N, this engine is available in 130 Bhp-300 Nm, 172 Bhp-370 Nm and 172 Bhp-400 Nm states of tune. On the XUV700, which is Mahindra’s flagship vehicle, the mHawk diesel is available in 153 Bhp-360 Nm, 182 Bhp-420 Nm and 182 Bhp-450 Nm outputs. On both SUVs, this engine gets 6 speed manual and torque converter automatic gearbox options. While the diesel gets an all wheel drive option on the top-end XUV700 trims, it gets a four wheel drive transfer case on the top-end Scorpio-N. While the XUV700 is front wheel driven, the Scorpio-N is rear wheel driven.
Launched in June this year, the Scorpio-N has been Mahindra’s third consecutive super hit, apart from the XUV700 and new Thar. Bookings for the Scorpio-N are currently closed as Mahindra is engaged in servicing the 50,000 orders it received in just 30 minutes of online bookings opening. Waiting times for the Scorpio-N span almost 2 years for specific variants. Mahindra is working on increasing production and waiting times are likely to fall by the middle of next year. A similar story played with Mahindra’s previous launches – the new Thar in 2020, and the XUV700 in 2021. While the new Thar is now available with waiting times of 2-4 months, the XUV700 continues to have wait times of up to one year for specific variants.
