BMC To Set Up Food Trucks In 50 Locations Across Mumbai & Beautify Footpaths For Foodie Customers
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned to set up food trucks in around 50 locations in Mumbai, along with the beautification of footpaths in several parts of the city. These food trucks will be allowed to sell only cooked food and not fruits and vegetables. According to the plans, each ward will have a minimum of two food trucks. However, the number of slots will depend on the amount of area available in a particular region. In this regard, BMC has decided to roll out a detailed food truck policy and float tenders.
The Slots For Food Trucks To Be Assigned Via Auction
The slots for the food trucks in Mumbai will be assigned via auction, in a similar way of giving slots for on-street parking lots in the city. According to a Hindustan Times report, a BMC official has stated, “All food trucks will require a NOC from the traffic police and other departments like the fire brigade. We will also identify the location and fix timings for the food trucks as part of the policy.” The Indian Hotel Company (IHCL) has already launched its first food truck in Mumbai to serve gourmet food from fine-dining restaurants.
Some Food Trucks Will Be Given To Women Self-Help Groups
Municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has instructed the officials to create a comprehensive policy to permit the setting up of food trucks at 50 locations in the city. BMC will give some of these food trucks to the women self-help groups in Mumbai. Earlier, state tourism minister Aaditya Thackeray had announced the launching of food trucks to boost tourism in Mumbai. The actions got delayed due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. BMC has reserved around ₹200 crores in the 2021-22 budget for developing food hubs, beautifying footpaths and renovating spaces below flyovers. Meanwhile, Mumbai’s First Restaurant On Wheels Has Come Up At Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.
